Spain changes long air routes
Austin News.Net Saturday 19th July, 2008
Spain says it might change commercial airline routes to make them shorter and more direct in order to offset high fuel prices.
The Spanish Defence Ministry has been asked to re-adjust airspace boundaries, currently reserved for military use.
Shorter routes would reduce flying time and allow for airlines to use their planes and crews on more flights each day in addition to cutting fuel costs.
Spanair, which is Spain's second-largest airline said on Friday it would need to reduce about a quarter of its workforce due to fuel cost considerations.
