ATHENS -- Two high school students have died and at least eight people were injured after a strong earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale hit the eastern Aegean Sea off Greece's Island of Samos on Friday, Greek national news agency AMNA reported.

The two students, aged 17 and 15, were trapped in a narrow street of Vathy town on the island when the walls of an old building collapsed, AMNA reported, citing the General Secretariat for Civil Protection.

The number of people suffering from injuries has risen to eight, Nikos Stefanis, director of the local hospital, told AMNA. (Earthquake-Death)

ISTANBUL -- At least 12 people were killed and 438 others were wounded at a strong earthquake that hit Turkey's western province of Izmir on Friday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said.

At a televised speech in Istanbul, Erdogan said search and rescue operations are continuing in the ruins of 17 buildings.

A 6.6-magnitude earthquake hit the Aegean Sea off Turkey's western province of Izmir at around 1150 GMT at a depth of 16.54 km, and the epicenter was 17.26 km off the Seferihisar district. (Earthquake-Death)

WASHINGTON -- The United States reported over 90,000 COVID-19 cases Thursday, the record high single-day total since the onset of the pandemic in the country. Total cases surpassed 9 million on Friday.

It took only 14 days for the country to add one million new cases from 8 million to 9 million, the fastest rate since the pandemic began.

Cases and deaths have skyrocketed across the United States in recent days. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 90,155 new COVID-19 cases and 1,055 new deaths on Thursday, marking the fourth time in a week that daily cases topped 80,000. (US-COVID-19-Cases)

HOUSTON -- The number of voters who cast ballots in the U.S. state of Texas in early voting period this year has surpassed the total number of people who voted in 2016 election, the Texas Tribune reported Friday.

The Texas Tribune has been tracking early voting in Texas. According to its figures, from Oct. 13 through Oct. 29, 9,009,850, or 53 percent of registered voters, have voted so far, with one day of early voting left. In 2016, 8,969,226 Texans cast a ballot in the presidential race. (Presidential Election-Voting)
