Brian White scored the game's only goal in the 20th minute and Maxime Crepeau saved a last-minute penalty shot as the Vancouver Whitecaps did just enough to defeat visiting FC Dallas 1-0 on Saturday evening in a key Western Conference match in British Columbia, Canada.

After leading throughout, Vancouver turned to Crepeau to save the three points, and he was up to the task. He dove to his right to make the save on a penalty kick by Franco Jara six minutes into second-half stoppage time after FC Dallas' Jader Obian was fouled in the box.

The Whitecaps (8-8-9, 33 points) moved into eighth place in the West standings, three points and one place below the playoff line. Vancouver is now 6-1-4 in its past 11 matches and is 4-0-2 in matches when it's scored first this season.

White got the Whitecaps on the board in the 20th minute, working across the box to move into position to head home a centering pass from Russell Teibert and beating Dallas keeper Jimmy Maurer low into the right corner.

FC Dallas dominated the match statistics, earning advantages in possession percentage (59.1 percent to 40.9 percent), passing accuracy (82.8 percent to 76.1 percent), total passes (559-377), shots on goal (7-5) and tackles won.

Crepeau turned away seven shots to record his fourth clean sheet of the season and earned his 10th shutout in his nine-year MLS career. He dove to make saves on Ricardo Pepi in the 78th minute and Jesus Ferreira in the 80th to keep Dallas off the board but those stops just set the table for his last-minute heroics.

FC Dallas (6-11-9, 27 points) is now 2-4-3 in its past 10 matches (with both of its wins in that span coming against expansion Austin FC, the last-place team in the West) and remains in 11th place with seven matches left on its schedule.

Saturday's game was the team's first with interim head coach Marco Ferruzzi at the helm. Ferruzzi took over for FC Dallas after Luchi Gonzalez was dismissed by the team earlier this week.
